  • Escherichia coli Sepsis and Ampicillin Resistance in Neonates: his study consisted of a review of data from infants with Escherichia coli sepsis who received care at one US hospital from 1979 to 2006, with the goal of determining how E coli resistance to ampicillin may change as more infants are exposed to intrapartum antibiotics. The study authors noted that E coli has begun to replace Group B Streptococcus as the predominant organism in "early-on set sepsis" (EOS) in the first 72 hours of life. This study looked at pathogens in both EOS and "late-ons et sepsis" (LOS) -- sepsis that takes place after 72 hours of life-- -- with an emphasis on the susceptibility patterns of E coli isolates across the 28-year time period.
